VICTORIA (March 5, 2018) – Stephanie Cadieux, MLA for Surrey South introduced the Equal Pay Certification Act in the Legislature today.
“This bill is intended to start a conversation in the business community about how we can achieve pay equity,” says Cadieux. “I’ve had the opportunity in my career to work with many talented and hard-working women, and today women make up 60 per cent of the workforce. Unfortunately, there is still a wage gap between men and women and we need to work together to address that.”
If passed, the Equal Pay Certification Act would encourage publicly traded companies in the province to consider measures that will improve pay equity. These companies will be able to determine best practices and set an example for the rest of the business sector on how to proactively address wage gaps on their payrolls.
“This is a bill designed to be flexible, but will also provide an opportunity to show that businesses are ready to address this long-standing issue,” says Cadieux. “The B.C. Legislature has the most women elected to office in Canada, and what better place to encourage equality than right here.”
