Horgan Should Give Golf Cash to BC Fire Victims

After taking another tour of the areas hardest hit by forest fires this summer, Nechako Lakes MLA John Rustad has a simple message for the BC NDP – fill the coffers of the BC Fires Appeal, not your own pockets.

“On Thursday the BC NDP are planning a massive private fundraiser at the exclusive Bear Mountain Resort at the same time huge swaths of the province are burning,” says Rustad. “My advice to Premier Horgan is to show he and the BC NDP care by donating the profits from that fundraiser to the fire fund.”

The BC NDP and Greens had the opportunity to ban corporate and union donations in June and chose not to. Instead, Premier Horgan is continuing to host fundraisers – including Thursday’s golf adventure which at $500 per person will flow thousands of dollars into the party coffers.

“We get it, Horgan wants to retire his party’s debt before he follows through on his campaign promise,” says Rustad. “But the right thing to do is at least donate the cash raised from the golf tournament to the people who have been devastated by the fires.

“It sends the wrong message when the premier spends very little time in the region that’s burning but is quite happy to hobnob on the golf course. We have real people who need help and they need it now. The premier has said he will be there for people – here’s a way to prove it and put his money where his mouth is.”

Even the BC NDP’s junior partner, Andrew Weaver, has been critical of the premier for going ahead with this fundraiser after pledging to put an end to corporate and union donations. “I think it’s quite outrageous that the B.C. NDP would be using a pay-for-access event like this,” he told the Times Colonist, earlier this month. “You’re essentially advertising, ‘Come play golf with Premier Horgan.’ That’s just not appropriate as a fundraiser.”
