VANCOUVER (September 5, 2017) – BC Liberal Attorney General critic Andrew Wilkinson issued the following statement on the NDP’s decision to increase ICBC rates:
“The reality is that ICBC has faced a surge in accidents and claims, resulting in claims of $2.4 billion being paid out in 2015 alone.
“While the NDP seem intent on laying blame, the previous government took steps to keep increases affordable and stable for families. In his first act as minister, David Eby is raising rates by eight per cent and offering nothing new to control the growth of claims.
“British Columbia has the toughest drunk driving laws, increased penalties for distracted driving, has doubled premiums on high-end luxury vehicles, shrunk the ICBC executive team and transferred money from optional insurance to keep the basic insurance costs low.
“Many of the actions the NDP are proposing today were contained in the Ernst and Young report commissioned earlier this year. Instead of offering new ideas on how to control the cost issue, Eby is attempting to lay blame for the challenges ICBC is currently facing rather than provide his own plan.”
