Statement from BC Liberal Environment Critic on World Environment Day

VICTORIA (June 5, 2018) – BC Liberal Environment Critic Peter Milobar released the following statement on World Environment Day:

“This day serves as a reminder of how important it is to protect our environment—not only through our words, but in our actions as well.

“I’m proud of the actions our former BC Liberal government took to balance the protection of our environment with the growth of our economy.

“We worked with the forestry industry, First Nations and environmental groups to protect the Great Bear Rainforest, the largest contribution to the Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy initiative. In order to protect our coastline, we negotiated a $1.5 billion Oceans Protection Plan as part of the five conditions for approval of heavy oil pipelines. The BC Liberals introduced the first revenue-neutral carbon tax, the first in North America, which reduced emissions while increasing GDP. And we laid the groundwork for the world’s greenest LNG industry, a cleaner fuel that would displace coal in growing markets in Asia.

“These are examples of what can be achieved when we work together with our partners to not only protect the oceans and lands we love— but create jobs and opportunities for British Columbians as well.”
