Statement from MLA Jackie Tegart, BC Liberal Caucus Chair on Persons Day

“Today is a significant day for women across Canada as we recognize Persons Day, the day women became considered persons under Canadian Law and changed our history forever.

“Looking around British Columbia at all the progress we have made as women, we’re proud to see the determined efforts of Emily Murphy, Louise McKinney, Irene Parlby, Nellie McClung and Henrietta Muir Edwards have helped make our province a better place for all of us.

“It is an incredible honour to serve in the B.C Legislature and it’s hard to believe that at one point, women weren’t allowed to hold public office or even vote. Persons Day is a day that reminds us to remain committed to equality, opportunity and to stand up for what is right, even if it takes a little extra courage.”
