Statement from Opposition Leader Rich Coleman marking the beginning of Hanukkah

“Tonight at sundown the Jewish community in British Columbia and across the world will come together to mark the first night of Hanukkah.

“Over the next eight nights, families and friends will gather around menorahs big and small, to light candles day by day. Latkes will be made, dreidels will be spun, and donuts will be fried.

“With the lighting of the first candle this evening, we should all give pause and think back to the origins of Hanukkah, and why the Jewish Festival of Lights is commemorated. It is a story of great struggle and adversity, but most importantly it is a story about hope. The triumph of light over dark, and perseverance over oppression. It teaches us that with enough dedication, peace can prevail. These lessons of Hanukkah are ones that we should all take to heart.

“On behalf of the BC Liberal Caucus and our staff here in Victoria, I am pleased wish you and your loved ones a Happy Hanukkah! Chag Hanukkah Sameach!”
