VICTORIA (October 18, 2018) – BC Liberal House Leader Mary Polak released the following statement today for Persons Day:
“Today we recognize Persons Day – the day women were legally declared persons in Canada and became eligible to hold public office.
“My female colleagues and I are able to take our place in the legislature today thanks to five remarkable women: Emily Murphy, Louise McKinney, Irene Parlby, Nellie McClung, and Henrietta Muir Edwards. Their efforts paved the way for women’s inclusion in public life and undoubtedly changed the way we do politics in Canada.
“Persons Day is an opportunity to look back and acknowledge the progress we’ve made, while also turning our attention to the future and recognizing the work we still need to do. We’ve come a long way in 89 years, but women continue to face barriers to equality. We all have a role to play in breaking those down.”
