BC Liberal statement on celebration of Yalda

VICTORIA (December 21, 2020) – Interim Leader of the Official Opposition Shirley Bond released the following statement today for Yalda:

“Tonight, Persian families and those from Iranian, Afghan, Azeri, Kurdish, Tajik, and Uzbek backgrounds will celebrate the solstice with their annual Yalda celebration.

“On this darkest night of the year, Yalda represents the victory of light over dark and welcomes a new season.

“People traditionally gather with friends and relatives to pass the longest night of the year by eating pomegranates, reading Hafiz poems, and making wishes for a good winter.

“While this Yalda will look different due to COVID-19 and public health restrictions, that desire for a good winter and a new season is one shared by all British Columbians after a long and difficult 2020.

“As we head towards that new season, with the nights getting shorter and our days brighter, the entire BC Liberal Caucus wishes everyone celebrating Yalda hope and happiness on this important occasion. May you be blessed with happiness and new light in 2021.

“Shab-e Yalda Mobarak!”
