Budget ignores search and rescue funding

NORTH VANCOUVER (February 22, 2019) – The BC NDP government’s latest provincial budget fails to address the lack of renewed funding for British Columbia’s 80 search and rescue (SAR) associations.

“The NDP needs to provide funding for the British Columbia Search and Rescue Association (BCSARA) so it can deliver advanced training and equipment for member organizations,” says North Vancouver-Seymour MLA Jane Thornthwaite. “With climate change resulting in more extreme seasons, search and rescue groups will need more training and equipment to safely and effectively respond to calls.”

B.C.’s search and rescue groups rely on 2,500 volunteers who contribute their time and energy to respond to emergency incidents across the province.

In 2016, the previous BC Liberal government provided BCSARA with $10 million in funding. This money is set to run out on March 31 and the NDP has yet to provide any replacement funding or a plan to address it.
