Committee tour on local meat production and inspection wraps up

VICTORIA (June 14, 2018) – An all-party committee tour examining issues related to local meat production and inspection has wrapped up, and two of the BC Liberal members of the committee say a lot of helpful input was gathered.

The Select Standing Committee on Agriculture, Fish and Food made several stops to communities across B.C. to hear directly from local farmers, producers, processors, restaurateurs, consumers, and other British Columbians. Fraser-Nicola MLA Jackie Tegart serves as Deputy Chair of the committee.

“I want to thank everyone from Williams Lake to Castlegar to Vancouver Island and beyond, who participated in these public hearings,” says Tegart. “The thoughtful suggestions and feedback we received will prove invaluable as the committee sits down to compile its recommendations.”

BC Liberal Agriculture Critic Ian Paton is a member of the committee. He notes there are meat producers of diverse sizes and operations in every corner of the province.

“When you fly over British Columbia, you realize just how many rural farm properties there are in this province. Everything from big time ranches to little five-acre farms,” says Paton. “This tour has impressed upon me the importance of access to licensed, inspected abattoirs for all meat producers in B.C. which will ultimately help to rebuild the herd size in our province.”
