FORT ST. JOHN (January 5, 2020) – BC Liberal MLA Dan Davies has been appointed Deputy Chair for the Special Committee to Reform the Police Act, a committee set up to examine and make recommendations on reforms for British Columbia’s Police Act.
“I am incredibly honoured to take on this role and help carry out this vital undertaking alongside my colleagues,” said Davies. “Our aim is to not only improve policing efficiency, but also transparency and accountability, as well as ensuring the police serve the public as safely and as ethically as possible.”
The committee will be tasked with reviewing the role of police concerning complex social issues including mental health and wellness, addictions and harm reduction, as well as issues of racism. The committee will also outline any measures necessary to ensure a modernized Police Act is consistent with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
“As public servants, we all share the same goal of ensuring our police agencies are here to serve the public above all else,” added Davies. “I look forward to working with members from all sides of the House and presenting our findings to the Legislature along with any recommended actions.”
