ASHCROFT (September 16, 2019) – BC Liberal and Fraser-Nicola MLA Jackie Tegart issued the following statement on the President of the United Steelworkers Local 1-417 call to reduce the costs of logs under the current stumpage fee structure to help address the forestry crisis and keep workers employed:
“For months the BC Liberals have been calling for John Horgan and the NDP to take meaningful action to help address the forestry crisis including lowering stumpage fees but so far the government has done nothing.
“Now Marty Gibbons, President of United Steelworkers Local 1-417 is also calling on government to reduce the cost of logs because without action soon, his workers and their small communities are facing the end to their jobs and their way of life.
“When John Horgan and the NDP will finally decide to act is anyone’s guess, but in the meantime B.C. forestry workers, their families and their communities continue to pay for government’s inaction. The BC Liberals will keep fighting for hard-working British Columbians who deserve so much more.”
