John Horgan and the NDP continue to take Nanaimo for granted, still no investment in critical port expansion

PARKSVILLE (August 7, 2019) – In light of the recent announcement of a major federal investment of $46.2 million for infrastructure improvements at the Port of Nanaimo, Parksville-Qualicum MLA Michelle Stilwell is calling on John Horgan and the NDP to stop stalling and deliver critical funding.

“All partners involved, including the Federal Government, the Port of Nanaimo, and the Snuneymuxw First Nation, have managed to come together for this important $98-million expansion project, except John Horgan who refuses to commit to the project,” said Stilwell.

An expanded port presents a significant opportunity for Nanaimo to transform into a regional logistics hub and international gateway for goods moving to and from Vancouver Island. With no fixed link to the mainland, a more efficient and resilient marine transportation system is needed to ensure the economic future of the region.

“It’s clear that with the by-election behind them, John Horgan and the NDP are yet again taking Nanaimo for granted,” concluded Stilwell. “First they refuse to consult the community on their failed modular housing plans and now they are M.I.A on our critical port expansion.”

As the population continues to grow mid-island, it is more important than ever for port capacity to keep up. Nanaimo and surrounding communities require a port that can handle the region’s growing economy.
