Joint Statement by Andrew Wilkinson and Teresa Wat on the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination

VICTORIA (March 21, 2020) — BC Liberal leader Andrew Wilkinson and Richmond- North Centre MLA Teresa Wat released the following joint statement today for the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination:

“Today, British Columbians join the world to recognize and honour the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

“Although racism and bigotry must be opposed every day, today is a moment to reflect on how far we have come and what steps we must take to further the spirit of tolerance and acceptance that we celebrate here in British Columbia.

“Our province is home to a wide array of vibrant multicultural communities. With the ongoing health crisis of COVID-19, every British Columbian has a civic and moral duty to not only prevent the spread of the virus, but also prevent the spread of false information, racial stereotypes, and xenophobic fear-mongering that can accompany pandemic fears.

“Our BC Liberal Caucus know that the best defense is to promote tolerance in our communities, look out for one another, and ensure that every British Columbian is supported and accepted, regardless of their race or ethnicity. “
