Saanich students forced to stay home as strike action shuts down 18 schools

VICTORIA (October 28, 2019) – Parents in Saanich School District 63 are being forced to find alternative care for their kids today as support workers take strike action, shutting down 18 schools.

“Over 7,300 students are not in their classrooms today thanks to inaction from John Horgan and the NDP,” said BC Liberal Education Critic and MLA for Peace River North Dan Davies. “With no new negotiations planned, it’s hard to see kids back in classrooms anytime soon.”

The Saanich School District superintendent commented that he had done everything in his power under the Ministry of Education’s mandate to resolve the solution, however, it simply was not enough to keep support workers from taking strike action.

“This all comes at a time of uncertainty for families around BC who still haven’t seen the NDP reach an agreement with the BC Teachers Federation,” concluded Davies. “Parents just want to see their kids in classrooms, instead they are seeing broken promises from John Horgan and the NDP.”
