Statement from Andrew Wilkinson on D-Day Anniversary

VICTORIA (June 6, 2019) – Leader of the Official Opposition, Andrew Wilkinson, released the following statement today on the 75th Anniversary of D-Day:

“Today marks the 75th anniversary of D-Day which saw nearly 150,000 Allied troops land or parachute into France to launch the Battle of Normandy. 14,000 of those troops were Canadian.

“On June 6th alone, our country suffered 1,074 casualties, including 359 killed. By the time the Battle of Normandy had concluded, we had lost 5,000 Canadian soldiers with casualty numbers reaching over 18,000.

“Today we commemorate their victory and remember the bravery and sacrifices. We give thanks to those who served and stepped up in the collective effort to stop Nazi aggression and its hateful and vile ideology from spreading.

“75 years later, we must honour their legacy and strive to continue to build the free, prosperous, and inclusive Canada that we all want to live in.

“That is our solemn vow to those who made the greatest sacrifice.

“Thank you.”
