VICTORIA (November 25, 2019) – Leader of the Official Opposition Andrew Wilkinson released the following statement today for the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women:
“Today we commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and recognize that more work must be done to end the tragic epidemic of physical and sexual violence that continues to occur here in British Columbia and all around the world.
“The BC Liberal Caucus strongly believes in the empowerment of women and the participation of men as vital steps to effectively tackle and end gender-based violence. In doing so, we can make homes and communities across British Columbia safer for everyone.
“It is important that we commit ourselves to take responsibility as a community to prevent violence against women, ensure employer supports, and access to healthcare for all who need it. We must also end the stigma that violence is somehow the fault of the woman and ensure that men speak out, hold one another accountable, and do their part to pledge to end gender-based violence.
“Whether it’s at the workplace, home, or out in public, we need to ensure that we create and foster spaces where women feel safe, respected, and treated with care.
“Let’s make sure the dreams and opportunities of our daughters are no less than those of our sons.”
