VICTORIA (October 17, 2019) – Marvin Hunt, MLA for Surrey-Cloverdale and Opposition Critic for Social Development and Poverty Reduction, has released the following statement commemorating the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty:
“Today marks the 27th anniversary of the UN General Assembly’s International Day for the Eradication of Poverty and this year’s theme will focus on the empowerment of children, their families, and communities to help end poverty.
“Poverty is a complex and multi-dimensional issue that impacts communities around the world and here at home. Today, we as British Columbians can participate in a global movement that works to eradicate poverty and affirm the human rights and dignity of those for whom it is a daily reality.
“Of the 550,000 people in B.C. living below the poverty line, nearly 100,000 of those are children. Every child deserves a standard of living that grants them the resources and opportunities to achieve their full potential. By learning what we can do to help, educating those around us, and promoting further participation, we take the first steps in helping to eradicate poverty for good.”
